Are you planning a renovation? Demolition work—the first stage following the planning phase of a comprehensive or major apartment overhaul—requires careful preparation to ensure the entire process proceeds smoothly and without errors.
To begin, rooms must be cleared of personal belongings and furniture. Renovation work should ideally be conducted in an empty apartment; this significantly accelerates the process. The less furniture present, the easier it is for the construction crew to carry out the room upgrades. If you have nowhere to store your furniture, specialized companies offer temporary storage solutions for personal items and furnishings.
Demolition work is carried out in a specific sequence:
- First comes the removal of doors, built-in furniture, baseboards, and windows. Once the windows have been removed, the openings are temporarily boarded up. The new window units—which typically take about a month to manufacture—are then installed. This installation process must be completed before any final finishing work begins.
- The next stage involves the removal of electrical fixtures—specifically light fixtures and outlets. This task is entrusted to experienced electricians who can set up temporary lighting to facilitate ongoing work and, subsequently, install the new electrical wiring throughout the apartment.
- The demolition of walls—including partitions, niches, and doorways—is typically carried out without first stripping away the old surface finishes. The only exception is ceramic tile; removing a wall covered in tile presents a greater challenge.
- Next comes the removal of plaster and surface coverings. This includes wallpaper, laminate flooring, tiles, and any old plaster that has become loose and can be easily chipped away. Everything is stripped down to the bare structural base.
- Finally, the removal of the flooring takes place. There are two popular methods for updating floor coverings:
- You can install new tiles, laminate, or parquet directly over the existing flooring, applying localized leveling screed where necessary to ensure a smooth, even surface.
- Remove the old tiles, gather the sand or bedding material, dry or replace it, and then re-lay the flooring.

The removal of bathtubs, sinks, hot and cold water lines, sewage risers, and water heaters requires the expertise of specialized professionals. It is essential to use protective coverings for elevators and stairwells, and to take every precaution to avoid causing inconvenience to neighbors. Please note that noisy work is suspended during the midday hours; this time is best utilized for sorting debris and cleaning the workspace.
